How Does Walmart Pay Work – A Simple Guide
Walmart Pay is a convenient and secure way to purchase at your favorite store. It’s an innovative payment method that allows you to use your smartphone to pay for your items without needing cash or cards. So, think along the lines of Apple Pay or Google Pay, but specifically for Walmart stores.
Here’s how it works:
- Create a Walmart.com account if you don’t already have one.
- Download the Walmart app on your smartphone.
- Open the Walmart app and tap on “Walmart Pay.”
- Add the payment cards you’d like to link to Walmart Pay. It works with all major credit and debit cards.
- Once you’ve added your payment cards, you can quickly check out and pay using your smartphone at any register in-store.
Setting Up Walmart Pay
First things first, you’ll need to download and open the Walmart app on your smartphone. Sign in to your Walmart account or create one if you don’t have it already. Once you’re logged in, navigate to the “Services” section and look for “Walmart Pay.”
Follow the prompts to set up Walmart Pay by linking your preferred payment method, such as a debit card, credit card, or even a Walmart gift card. Remember that Walmart Pay cannot be directly linked to a bank account, so make sure you have your card information handy.
Using Walmart Pay
Now that your account is all set up, you’re ready to use Walmart Pay at the store. At the checkout counter, open the Walmart app and select Walmart Pay. A QR code will be displayed on your phone screen.
Scan the QR code using the scanner at the payment terminal, and your payment will be processed. Keep in mind that Walmart Pay can only be used at Walmart locations and not at other retailers.
Walmart Pay Features
I like Walmart Pay for its convenience. It’s a touch-free solution and feels very similar to tap-to-pay offerings that you can find in most stores. So, next, ill go over the QR code, how to access it, and then some other cool features like the shopping list you can build right within the app. I’ll also review PIN codes and security features that make the app safe.
QR Code
One of Walmart Pay’s main features is using QR codes for easy transactions. When you’re at the store, open the Walmart app on your smartphone and access Walmart Pay.
A unique QR code will be generated, which you can scan at the register to complete your purchase. This eliminates the need to carry cash or physical cards. And also, by simply scanning your QR code at the register, you can complete your payment without touching any surfaces, ensuring a safe and secure retail experience.
Shopping List
Another useful feature of Walmart Pay is the integrated shopping list. With this, you can easily create and manage your shopping list within the Walmart app, keeping track of items you need to buy.
As you browse and shop in-store, you can use your smartphone to check off items from your list, ensuring you remember everything and helping you stay organized during your shopping trip.
I find this handy for groceries or if I’m in the store to pick up something I normally wouldn’t get. At the end of my shopping trip, I just check the list, and if anything is missing, then it’s an easy fix!
PIN and Touch ID
To enhance the security of your transactions, Walmart Pay requires you to authenticate each payment by either entering a unique security PIN or using biometric identification, such as Touch ID or facial recognition, depending on your device’s capabilities. That’s neat because it ensures you have multiple ways to complete your transactions and that only you will be able to do it.
This minimizes the risk for you, especially if you ever lose your phone and someone tries to use your Walmart Pay account without your permission.
Data Security
Walmart takes data security seriously and follows industry best practices to safeguard your personal information. They have various data security measures to protect your sensitive data from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.
In addition to requiring a PIN or biometric identification for transactions, Walmart also participates in privacy-related programs. It maintains privacy-related certifications to ensure the ongoing protection of your personal information.
So in a nutshell, none of your stuff is public, and you can rest easy linking it up to your cards and bank accounts.
Payment Methods and Usage
The payment options you have with Walmart Pay are pretty standard. It’s flexible enough for most major credit cards, but it can also be attached to your bank cards too.
Credit and Debit Cards
Walmart Pay lets you link your credit cards to your mobile device, simplifying shopping and paying at checkout. When you scan the QR code, that amount will be deducted from the linked credit card, and the app will save your receipt.
All major cards are accepted so that, including Visa, Mastercard, and the like. Similarly, you can link your debit cards to Walmart Pay in the same manner as credit cards.
Gift Cards
If you’ve ever handled lots of gift cards, you know how easy it is to lose them, misplace them, or mix them up with one that looks just like it. Thankfully, Walmart has added the ability to link those to your Walmart Pay account too, similar to Starbucks Rewards.
To use a gift card, first link it to your Walmart Pay account. When checking out, you can choose the gift card as your payment method, and the amount will be deducted from the gift card balance.
The only catch, however, is that you cannot use a gift card to purchase another gift card. But everything else within the terms of your gift card is fair game!
Cash Back Credit Card
If you have a cash-back credit card, like the Capital One Walmart Credit Card, you can also use it with Walmart Pay. You can earn rewards and cashback on your Walmart purchases by linking your cash-back credit card to the app. This allows you to enjoy additional savings and benefits while you shop.
Can I use EBT with Walmart Pay?
Currently, Walmart Pay does not support EBT payments. To use your EBT card, you’ll need to swipe or insert it at the register when you’re checking out.
Walmart Pay and Other Services
I do a lot of shopping with Walmart and its brands, and I was surprised to see that Walmart Pay is accepted in a couple of other places, not just the main store.
Murphy USA Fuel Stations
Walmart Pay can be used at participating Murphy USA Fuel Stations. This adds convenience as you can securely pay for your fuel without needing your physical wallet.
Pharmacy
When managing your prescriptions, Walmart Pay makes it easier than ever. You can use Walmart Pay at the pharmacy counter of participating Walmart Pharmacy locations for a seamless payment experience.
Grocery Pickup and Delivery
Walmart Pay simplifies your grocery shopping experience by allowing you to use it for Grocery Pickup and Delivery services. When using the Walmart app for grocery shopping, you can select your payment method, including Walmart Pay, during checkout. This ensures a secure and streamlined process for your grocery needs.
Sam’s Club
Unfortunately, Walmart Pay is explicitly designed for store use and is not supported at Sam’s Club locations. However, Sam’s Club offers its own mobile app with a convenient Scan & Go feature, allowing you to scan items as you shop and pay directly.
I found that a little odd since Walmart owns Sam’s, but I can understand how they want to separate the entities.
